"Thanks to his passionate delivery and gift for interpretation, Owens successfully proves that the songs of Johnny Cash belong every bit in the soul canon as they do in country." - Joseph Hudak, Rolling Stone Magazine
A year ago, I got a phone call to come sing on a project that bridges the gap between Country and Soul music...and I immediately said "YES!!!". Brian Owens brought together some incredible musicians and singers to perform song from an iconic American artist, Johnny Cash, and I'm honored to have been among them. It's authentic, soulful, and a beautiful tribute to a great artist. Soul of Cash features "Ring of Fire", "Folsom Prison", and an original song written by myself and Brian called "Soul in My Country". You can read more about it at RollingStone.com and get a copy on Itunes, Amazon, and Spotify. I will also be performing at the album release party in Nashville on Friday, Oct. 13, RSVP HERE for the show!!!
July 10-14, I will be teaching a Songwriting/Vocal Performance camp for kids ages 8-16 at Walltown Children's Theatre in Durham. We'll be composing, learning a little theory, as well as exploring movement and using our voices. It will be a great time!!! There are a few spots left...reserve your spot or get more information today by clicking HERE.

In addition to this show, I will be performing solo on the 19th and 20th:

Today I am proud and excited to present to you all the video for my song "Summerville" from my EP The Back Porch Sessions. This video is special because it was filmed in Summerville, GA, birthplace of my mother, Poopoo, and my great grandmother, during my show there on June 25. Several members of my family make cameos in this beautiful piece. A huge thank you to the city of Summerville, my family, and to Caleb Childers at Malachi Films for capturing the magic of this place and its people. If you like it, share it. Check it out by clicking the video above...
A HUGE thank you to Anita, Frank Stasio, and NPR's The State of Things for having me on the show. If you missed it, check out this video of the interview HERE as well as their write up of my visit HERE.
I was asked to give my take on the "controversy" over Beyonce's song "Daddy Lessons" from her new album Lemonade being played on Country radio stations nationwide. You can check out the Pop Dust article HERE and the Flavorwire piece HERE.
"Palmer is living in Raleigh, North Carolina, with her husband and their daughter and making trips back to Nashville to develop her new music — with its neo-soul-to-throwback-southern-R&B sound and down-home, confessional point-of-view — when and how she wants to. "It's a different vibe," she explains, sitting at a picnic table on the porch behind the 5 Spot. "The country's still there, because that's still a part of me. But this project is definitely more intentionally soul." - Jewly Hight
Thank you so much Jewly and Rolling Stone Country for this awesome article. You can check it out HERE.
If you missed it live last week, I had a wonderful interview with Charlie Mattos on WSM Radio in Nashville. You can check out the podcast of the interview and my live performance of "Summerville" from my new EP, The Back Porch Sessions HERE!
